Social Action, CITN Explore Partnership to Strengthen Nigeria’s Tax System

Abuja, Nigeria – September 15, 2025

Social Action, in collaboration with members of the FCT Tax Justice and Governance Platform (TJ&GP), on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) in Abuja.

The visit created a platform for frank conversations on tax justice, transparency, and good governance, with both institutions expressing willingness to work together to build a more equitable and accountable tax system in the country.

Speaking during the engagement, Social Action’s Programmes Coordinator Comr. Botti Isaac, highlighted the need for reforms that address multiple taxation, the burden on the informal sector, and the persistent trust deficit between taxpayers and government. He stressed that while citizens are increasingly subjected to different forms of taxation, the benefits in terms of public services remain largely invisible.

Officials of the CITN welcomed the delegation and acknowledged the importance of partnerships with civil society. They pointed to the CITN Tax Academy as a resource hub for training and capacity building, which could be leveraged to improve tax literacy among grassroots groups and informal sector actors.

The discussions also touched on policy reforms, citizen engagement, and the role of professional bodies in advocating for transparency and accountability in the use of tax revenues. Both sides agreed on the need for joint workshops, collaborative research, and public awareness campaigns to strengthen tax compliance and ensure that revenues are channelled into public goods.

According to participants, the collaboration will also push for simplified tax regimes and clearer frameworks that make it easier for small businesses and the informal sector to meet their obligations without being exploited.

The meeting ended with a shared commitment to deepen cooperation between Social Action, the TJ&GP, and the CITN, with the expectation of signing a partnership framework in the coming months.

Social Action has long championed issues of economic justice and responsible public finance management, working with communities and coalitions across Nigeria to demand accountability from government and fairer fiscal policies.
