This briefing paper sheds light on the intricate interplay between artisanal refineries and environmental degradation with a focus on the activities of “Kpo-fire” (as it is known locally) in Warri and its environs. By analyzing the factors driving the growth of these refineries and their impact on surrounding ecosystems, we seek to foster a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and potential solutions associated with this complex issue.
