Flames of Hell: Gas Flaring in the Niger Delta
Communities in the Niger Delta of Nigeria have suffered for 50 years from continuous gas flaring, as the government and oil companies fail to honour commitments to end this environmentally damaging practice. In 2008, the Nigerian government failed to compel oil-producing companies to comply with their commitment to end gas flaring. This ongoing pattern of government failures indicates the influence of oil companies on policies and governmental ineptitude and lack of political will to implement its own policies.
