Social Development Integrated Centre (Social Action) is a Nigerian organisation that works with community groups and other segments of civil society to promote platforms for encouraging change towards better democratic practices, people-oriented policy, improved livelihoods and human rights. Social Action works through research, popular education, advocacy and by building solidarity with communities and activists to promote citizens’ participation in addressing policies and practices in the sectors of energy, mining, the environment and climate change, trade and public budgets.Social Action has staff members and volunteers that work from its offices and Community Advocacy Centres in Port Harcourt, Abuja, Warri, Bori and Brass.
Social Action also works in Borno State to promote awareness of climate change impacts in the Lake Chad Basin and to encourage accountability in the management of humanitarian and development spending in northeast Nigeria.
Social Action is seeking the services of a Communications Manager to manage the internal and external communications of the organisation.
The Position
Reporting to the Executive Director, this position provides critical internal and external communications expertise to Social Action. The Communications Manager coordinates the external and internal communications and supports the organisation’s core advocacy objectives. Responsibilities include developing and leading the implementation of internal and external communications plans, providing communications expertise and support, and taking the lead in web communications.
Location
The Communications Manager shall work from the Abuja office or Port Harcourt office of Social Action.
Duties, Responsibilities, and Authorities
1. Communications Consultant and Liaison
a. Interact with departments, programmes and projects to develop media communications, public messages, press releases, and media kits (press conferences).
b. Provide direction for the organisation on communication best practices for programmes and projects.
c. Ensure that Social Action’s work is adequately presented to the public and staff members using the best content, visual brand standards and language.
d. Manage the development of monthly electronic newsletter (Nigeria Social Action Newsletter), annual reports, videos and presentations.
e. Create and manage an email mailing list for newsletters and other communication.
f. Working with Programme/Project Managers/Officers, manage Facebook, Twitter accounts of Social Action and ensure that the organisations work, project output and views are communicated to the widest possible audience.
g. Supporting programme staff with the writing of project proposals and project narrative reports.
2. Communications Planning and Implementation
a. Provide leadership in the management and implementation of strategic internal and external communications planning in line with the Five-Year Strategic Plan of Social Action.
b. Provide leadership in developing and editing of press releases, advocacy reports, briefing papers, newsletters, speeches, etc.
c. Provide leadership and work with Programme/Project Managers and Officers in developing, writing and/or designing publications to ensure that messaging is consistent with the values, goals and standards of Social Action.
3. Project Management
a. Provide project management support and expertise to departments and programmes as it relates to communications.
b. Collaborate with Programme/Project Managers/Officers to provide communications and design support to corporate events when required. This may include signage, brochures, web content and announcements.
4. Web Services
a. Provide leadership to the web administrator and manage web content to ensure that the websites, YouTubepage, Facebook and Twitter accounts of Social Action continues to function as communication and advocacy tools.
b. Develop and implement a strategy for promoting and popularising the website and social media platforms of Social Action to the broadest possible audience.
c. Review, write and edit website content regularly and oversee website architecture and design.
d. Recommend website enhancement to management of Social Action.
